I found this interesting story and thought I’d share it with you. Props to the original author. Enjoy!

The following is an actual question given on a University of ———— chemistry mid term.

The answer by one student was so ‘profound’ that the professor shared it with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well: (more…)

Here is an article I asked Julia Campbell to write regarding her experiences and thoughts about the Philippines. Never did it come to my mind that it will be the last. For everything that you have done, thank you very much Julia. May you finally find peace that you richly deserve. Your DWCL family loves you.

The Story of a US Peace Corps Volunteer
Ms. Julia Campbell

When I first came to the Philippines in March 2005, I was like a brand new baby. I had to learn how to do simple things – even something as simple as a trip to the CR. A tabo, what is that?

And of course, even though Filipinos are so good in English, I didn’t know the native language and had to learn from the beginning: Kumusta ka? Mabuti naman. And even a stroll down the street became a new experience. Suddenly, the anonymity I had on New York City was gone. Hundreds of eyes followed my every move. And I had a new name: Joe. (more…)

untitled.jpgIt came to me as a shock when I was informed of Julia Campbell’s disappearance since April 8, 2007 in the town of Banaue, Ifugao. Julia is a US Peace Corps volunteer assigned to teach English and Literature subjects in our school Divine Word College of Legazpi here in the Philippines.

She was last seen getting off a cab en route to a hike in the tourist area all by herself.

Julia has been missing for more than a week now and has raised concern for her safety particularly knowing the fact she went to the place alone. (more…)

The Aston Martin V12 Vanquish driven by James Bond in Die Another Day. Ah, such a jaw-dropping beauty. Sells for $255,000. I think I’ll have to work maybe five lifetimes-over to earn enough dough to buy one.

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 is a speed demon that clocks speeds of over 400 kph. Sweet. The price is sweeter at $1,700,000. Now, this is what I’d call a dream.

There are so many websites published in the internet today all offering fairly the same information, products and services. The web is becoming crowded generating so much “noise” making it a challenge to be “heard” by people browsing.

While it is wise to have a properly laid-out page complete with the needed buttons and pictures, being “seen” can prove to be difficult. An important feature of any decent webpage is an adequate content targeted to provide visitors with good information.

This helps establish credibility on your part and creates a rapport between you and your site’s visitor. It also lends authority to the particular field you are involved in. Good web content will not only hook your guests but also make them come back for more. (more…)

My Personal Legend January 16, 2007

I was intrigued by the buzz people were making about the book The Alchemist written by Paulo Coelho. It made me feel like I was being left out on something good so I looked for a copy to see if it’s worth my while.

I finally found one and was not disappointed. The book was really good and I found myself hanging on every word written by this master storyteller. I read and reread it not getting enough of the cleverly woven tale.

The story is all about the journey of a shepherd boy named Santiago in his quest for his personal legend. Along the way, he meets different people who in one way or another contributed to the fulfilment of his destiny. (more…)

Light Amidst the Darkness of Despair: My Encounter With Reming January 13, 2007

The day started out calmly like any other day with no indication whatsoever of a looming disaster. This seemingly surreal tranquility felt like a “deep breath before the plunge” as what Gandalf has said in the movie Lord of The Rings before the decisive battle against the Orcs. But this quiet is soon to be broken.

We’ve done packing everything in the house stacking them high enough to avoid the flood that is sure to come. The lesson from Milenyo is still fresh in our memories with the waist-deep water that soaked almost everything and we are not about to let that happen. Again. Or so we thought.

Reming came and furious was he. The torrential rains poured all its rage against our house while we closely watched the water level slowly rise. Protecting the appliances and clothes was foremost in our minds wary of the flood although we expected it not to exceed the level of the previous one brought by Milenyo. Little did we know that trouble was brewing. (more…)

How to Travel Safely January 13, 2007

Travelling is meant to be fun. However, uninformed tourists may get fun more than they ever wanted if they fail to make the necessary preparations for the trip.

While most trips are usually fun and enjoyable, it is always prudent to take the necessary precautions to help one prepare for any eventuality that might occur. Yes, it sounds like work but the benefits far outweigh the effort required for your preparations.

Make it a point to travel light. Doing so will help you move more quickly and will keep your hands free. Fatigue will not set in that easy so you will not find the need to set down your luggage and leave them unattended. (more…)
